Full Description
Prince Maname, who had completed his studies in Taxila, was returning to his kingdom with his wife. On the way, they had to pass through a dense forest. In the forest, they met a group of Veddas (forest dwellers). The very hungry prince sent his wife to ask them for some meat. When the Vedda king saw the princess, he fell in love with her and asked her to leave her husband and come to him. He gave her some raw meat. However, the princess returned the meat, saying that her husband did not like to eat raw meat. This made the Vedda king angry. He became even more furious because the prince had entered the forest without permission and because the meat was returned. Because of this, a fight began between the prince and the Vedda king. The prince gave his sword to his wife for safekeeping while he fought. During the fight, the prince was knocked down and asked for his sword. But the princess mistakenly gave the sword to the Vedda king and the sword cover to the prince.
Taking advantage of this mistake, the Vedda king killed the prince.
After that, the Vedda king told the princess to remove her gold ornaments so they could be safely taken across the river. After crossing the river, he refused to accept her and said she was a bad woman who helped kill her husband. The princess was left alone in the forest, crying. Seeing this, God Sakka (Sakra) felt pity and appeared in the form of a fox to mock her. The fox held a piece of meat in its mouth and tried to catch a fish in the river. In the attempt, it lost both the meat and the fish. The princess laughed at the fox. The fox then spoke to her, saying that she had lost a wise husband and her valuable jewels because of her own mistake. He asked her who was truly foolish, the fox or herself. At that moment, the princess realized the truth and understood her mistake.
