Full Description

This type of large earthenware storage vessel is known as a Martavan jar. Martavan was an export port on the coast of present-day Myanmar. These storage jars came to be known by that name because they were produced in the town associated with that port. This jar was recovered from the Dutch ship Avondster, which sank in Galle Harbour in 1659.
