Full Description

This special device was used to snuff out candle flames. Such candle snuffers are very rare as archaeological finds. Several examples of this kind have been recovered from excavations of ancient houses and from sunken ships in the Netherlands.
Historical Context This small metal device, designed to snuff out candle flames, reflects everyday life and domestic practices in early modern Europe, particularly during the 17th and 18th centuries. Candle snuffers were a common household item before the widespread use of gas and electric lighting, serving both a practical and safety-related function.
